Happy Presidents Day!

I hope that many of you are enjoying a day off home from work, relaxing in honor of.... who exactly?

I always associated Presidents Day with Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday, but this year I also thought I may include our recently elected president, Barack Obama, in my thoughts. But who are we really supposed to be celebrating? I wasn't sure, so I went to wikipedia to find out who exactly this national holiday is really observed in honor of.

"Washington's Birthday is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February. It is also commonly known as Presidents Day (or Presidents' Day). As Washington's Birthday or Presidents Day, it is also the official name of a concurrent state holiday celebrated on the same day in a number of states.

By the mid-1980s, with a push from advertisers, the term "Presidents' Day" began its public appearance.[1] The theme has expanded the focus of the holiday to honor another President born in February, Abraham Lincoln, and often other Presidents of the United States. Although Lincoln's birthday, February 12, was never a federal holiday, approximately a dozen state governments have officially renamed their Washington's Birthday observances as "Presidents Day", "Washington and Lincoln Day", or other such designations. 

However, "Presidents Day" is not always an all-inclusive term. In Massachusetts, while the state officially celebrates "Washington's Birthday," state law also prescribes that the governor issue an annual Presidents Day proclamation honoring the presidents that have come from Massachusetts: John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Calvin Coolidge, and John F. Kennedy.[2] (Coolidge, the only one born outside of Massachusetts, spent his entire political career before the vice presidency there. George H. W. Bush, on the other hand, was born in Massachusetts, but has spent most of his life elsewhere.) Alabama uniquely observes the day as "Washington and Jefferson Day", even though Jefferson's birthday was in April.[3] In New Jersey, Connecticut and Illinois, while Washington's Birthday is a federal holiday, Abraham Lincoln's birthday is still a state holiday, falling on February 12 regardless of the day of the week. In California, Lincoln's Birthday is also a legal state holiday, however, observance is frequently moved to the Monday or Friday occurring closest to February 12. When Lincoln's Birthday is observed on the Friday preceding Washington's Birthday, the resultant four-day weekend is commonly called "Presidents' Day Weekend", particularly by retailers in their sale advertisements. In Washington's home state of Virginia the holiday is legally known as "George Washington Day."

So there you have it, each state kind of picks and chooses which one of our late, great leaders they want to include in the mix and advertisers in the 80's made it a more inclusive day so that it sounds better for sales ;-) 

So if you are off today in honor of whomever, go out and pay your respects to whichever presidents you see fit, by doing your part to stimulate the economy at a blow out sale!

Shout Out: David Garcia Fine Art

I want to give a shout out to my friend, David Garcia. He is a Chicago-based photographer and artist and a fellow St. Louis native, who has just recently started selling his work on Etsy; you can check out his work on his Etsy shop.

I wanted to let everyone know that his work is currently showing in Chicago at Cafe Selmarie now through April 6, 2009.

And this Tuesday, February 17th, there is a "reception" for the artist. I will be heading that way after work for a bite and to see his masterpieces from his recent trip to France.

New Wall Decor: Crate & Barrel Outlet Finds

Since it's "busy season", Dave had to go into work on a Sunday...boo! So I dropped him off at work this afternoon and then I made my way to the Crate and Barrel Outlet armed with some wedding gift cards to see what I could find. I was excited to find some fun wall decor at drastically reduced prices.

First, I found these Crate&Barrel Medley Prints; $14.95 each reg. $29.95

Next, I grabbed this great Crate&Barrel Green Lacquer Mirror; $19.95; reg. $54.95

It looks like the mirror is no longer online, but it also comes in orange and white, so if you are lucky enough to live near an outlet you can stop by and check out what they have left.

I hung the mirror in our bedroom but still need to find the perfect spot for the four canvas prints. The ideal spot would be behind our TV in the living room, but there was no way I was going to attempt hanging and leveling those puppies alone, and risk toppling over onto the precious flat screen in the process. So I'll save that for a day when we can both participate in the hanging :-)

Valentine's Day Fondue for Two

Happy Valentine's Day!

In celebration of our first married Valentine's Day we are going to take advantage of the fondue set purchased for us as a gift from our wedding registry and have a nice night in. We are going shopping soon for all the ingredients to make a savory cheese and a super-sweet chocolate fondue, and we plan to use these two recipes:

Ingredients

1 clove garlic, halved
1 (12-ounce) bottle hard apple cider
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon brandy
Pinch kosher salt
5 ounces (2 cups) Gruyere, grated
5 ounces (2 cups) Smoked Gouda, rind removed, grated
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon curry powder
Several grinds fresh ground black pepper

Directions
Rub inside of fondue pot or heavy small saucepan with garlic. Pour cider into pot. Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, the brandy and salt and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Meanwhile, grate the cheese and toss well with the cornstarch in a large bowl. When the cider just begins to simmer, gradually add the cheese a handful at a time, allowing each addition to melt completely before adding the next. Continue adding cheese and stirring until all cheese is incorporated, about 3 minutes. If mixture starts to bubble, reduce heat to low. The mixture is ready when creamy and easily coats the back of a spoon. Stir in curry powder and pepper. If cheese seems stringy, add some or all of the remaining lemon juice. Move fondue pot to alcohol warmer, and keep stirring during service. 

A variety of breads, from pumpernickel to rye to bagel chunks can be skewered and dipped as can cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms and potatoes. (Soften all vegetables by blanching briefly in boiling water then chilling.) Crisp fruits such as apples make great fondue fodder, as do cooked meats and sausages. Even soft pretzels make for good dipping. If any fondue is left over, cover with ice water and refrigerate, pour off water and reheat over low heat.

Chocolate Coconut Cream Fondue, Coastal Living, JULY 2006

Ingredients
1 (11.5-ounce) package dark chocolate morsels
1 cup cream of coconut
1/2 cup whipping cream
1/2 teaspoon coconut extract

Preparation
Combine all ingredients in a large, heavy saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring until chocolate melts. Transfer to a fondue pot, and keep warm over a candle burner. Serve with pound cake and fresh fruit. For tropical flair, serve with bowls of toasted coconut and toasted sliced almonds.

We can't wait to try these out tonight.

Kitschy Kool: Volume 7: Telephone Tables/Benches

Recently, I have been really interested in finding a vintage telephone bench/telephone table and taking on a little refurbishing project all my own. After scouring the net for the perfect entryway bench piece (and falling short), I decided that a custom piece, like a revamped vintage telephone table, would be an unexpected addition to our entryway area.

I gained some inspiration from a few old entries I found on design blogs, like these "before" and "after" features from Design Sponge.

So now I am on the hunt for the perfect tattered table to take out my creativity on. I found one post on craigslist so far, and it's affordable but I'm not sure it is the one ...

It's nice and has tons of potential, but ideally I'd like it to have a small drawer, and maybe less ornate detail on top. What do you think?
